GCSE Mathematics

About This Course

WHAT WILL I STUDY?
The course will develop your ability to think and reason mathematically, and give you the confidence to use mathematics at work and in everyday life.  The course is divided into three modules of study, although appropriate connections will be made between the areas:
The Modules are:

Number and Algebra:

Number underpins the whole of mathematics and you will learn how to understand and use fractions, decimals and percentages. You also will learn how to manipulate whole positive and negative numbers and learn how to generalise in mathematics using algebra.

Handling Data:
You will develop your skills in collecting and presenting information and understand the theory of probability. You will learn how to interpret charts and graphs and use statistics to predict and test results.

Number and Algebra and Space, Shape and Measures:
You will learn about the properties of circles, triangles, four sided figures and other 2 and 3 dimensional shapes.
Algebra is a major component of this module.  You will learn how to solve problems, how to recognise patterns and rules using algebra and how to  represent  equations using graphs.

HOW IS THE COURSE TAUGHT?

The course is delivered through a combination of classroom activities and private study. You will spend 2 ½ hours a week in the classroom and you must be prepared to spend a similar amount of time studying on your own.  The self-study part of the course is very important and you should make sure you have the time available in order to complete the course successfully.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

Module 1: Handling Data is assessed by 2 written examinations which make up18% of the total marks.

Module 3:Number and Algebra is assessed by 2 written examinations which make up 27% of the total marks.

Module 5: Number and Algebra and Shape and Space is assessed by 2 written examinations which make up 55% of the total marks.

WHAT QUALIFICATION WILL I ACHIEVE?

The AQA GCSE Certificate in Mathematics (Modular).
